Trying Movable Type 4

December 17th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I’ve always enjoyed trying different blog software: over the years I’ve tried various iterations of Blogger, Movable Type and Wordpress, and when I read about Movable Type being open source going forward, I decided to give MT4 a try. I’ve used MT2 and MT3 and found installing them somewhat complicated — certainly compared to Wordpress, which is extremely straightforward. So I was expecting the install today to be challenging. Instead, I was very pleasantly surprised: two sets of uploading to different locations on my server, adjusting permissions on some of the files, setting up a new MySQL database in CPanel and following the MT installation wizard. There are clear, concise instructions at movabletype.org.

It’s still not quite as easy as Wordpress, but it’s a considerable step in the right direction. I’ve spent an hour exploring the software and it’s pleasant to use and offers all of the features I need, so I’ll use it for the foreseeable future and see how it goes.

    Hi G

Nice to see you back in the blogging fold again. I’m Wordpress through and through m’self, I’ve found that it works really well in combination with the interface on my hosting. How easy is it to customise an MT theme?

Thus far, I haven’t had much luck getting my head around themes - there seem to be fewer available for MT than for Wordpress, and having a look through some of the templates made my head hurt (though my memory of MT2 was that it was fairly straightforward to customise once one got one’s head around the structure).

For me, the advantages so far are largely administrative - for example, I love the idea that one installation of MT can power multiple blogs. I’m making a comprehensive set of notes and hope to publish a detailed comparison soon.
