- I’m back using Wordpress. I enjoyed trying Movable Type very much, and it’s a fine piece of software. However, Wordpress is just that bit more usable (and the import function from Movable Type works flawlessly).
- I’m going to be in New York for the O’Reilly Tools of Change Conference from 11-12 February. I’m really looking forward to this: there are some simply fantastic speakers, though if I have to single out one, I’m most looking forward to hearing Seth Godin, as I’m currently reading and enjoying his new book Meatball Sundae (disclosure: published by Piatkus, part of my employer Little, Brown). I’m going to be blogging about the conference, hopefully as I go along.
- Once I finish Meatball Sundae I’m looking forward to reading the proof copy of Clay Shirky’s new book Here Comes Everybody, which Penguin kindly sent me.
- And finally, I’d just like to note that the Asus EEE may be the best piece of technology that I’ve used for years. I’ll aim to post some more detailed thoughts in due course.

I’d be extremey interested in your thoughts on the EEE. I invested in a tablet about 6 months ago, and love using it, and a friend wants the same. I pointed him at the EEE as his budget is limited, and it looks to offer everything he needs…

Well, it’s important to bear in mind that it isn’t a tablet - there’s no touch screen and it’s a conventional notebook configuration. Where it scores though is in a) price b) small size and low weight and c) ability to customise (though this does depend somewhat on how comfortable one is with Linux). It’s really quite difficult to go wrong with it.

very nice to see a tag cloud too, I’m a big fan of them.

George, how easy are they to use if like me you know sod all about Linux (other than the fact you are supposed to wear a red hat when using it)? I’ve taken my own old Toshiba laptop to the last couple of conventions and while its done me good service its a bit heavy if you are walking round another city all day with it in the bag over your shoulder and I’m thinking this is the sort of thing I could stick more easily in a travel bag then sit in a cafe or bar with Wifi to use.

Joe, I promise you that you’d have no problems at all - I consider the EEE the most user-friendly Linux device I’ve ever used. Out of the box, you get a simple operating system with applications arranged by category (work/internet/play etc), and most common apps are preinstalled.
(There’s also a more conventional desktop mode which can be installed easily. And then, if you need something different, you can advance to installing other Linux distros on the EEE - for myself, I like eeexubuntu.)
But I’m getting ahead of myself - for basic web browsing, mail, MS Office compatible documents etc, it’s a total gem and easy to use.
